If you, like many business people and consumers, frequently handle transactions via Cash App, you may run into a scenario where you need to get money back from Cash App. Whether you accidentally sent it to the wrong person or you think you've been scammed, here is what you need to do to try and reclaim that lost cash.
Now, Cash App specifically states on their website that they do not cancel or refund any payments after they have been completed. However, there is still a small chance you can claw your money back. Here are your two best options:
Ask the recipient for the money back - This works best if you know the recipient, but if you don't, try searching for your Cash App username online. If you're lucky, the recipient may post it on their social media or website if they are a merchant of some sort.
Ask your bank for assistance - If you think you've been scammed into sending money through Cash App, contact your bank. They may be able to reimburse you for the funds lost after launching an investigation. Remember, only do this if you have truly been scammed, not simply because you are unhappy with a service or because you made a typo in the rightful recipient's name.
With a little luck, the recipient may send you the money back. You'll have a higher chance of success if the amount you sent was relatively small, say less than $50 USD. If you sent more than this, the chances are fairly slim of you getting it back. In this economy, no one is returning money that fell into their bank accounts. But if you're still interested in finding the mystery recipient, here is how you can do it.
Search Facebook - Facebook is still a monstrous social media platform that many people frequent for business transactions. If you search for your recipient in the Marketplace or via the person lookup, you may find them.
Check OfferUp - This platform is where people come to sell new and used goods online. Think of it as a local eBay of sorts. People often accept payment via Cash App here and may have listed their username.
Search their Twitter handles - Many people, especially business owners and social media professionals, utilize the same name across all platforms they frequent. Use this to your advantage and search for their names there.
When it comes to disputing a transaction with Cash App, the quicker you submit your claim, the better. But you generally will have 120 days to dispute a transaction from Cash App. Again, disputing transactions after they've been finalized is not something people have success with within this app.
Cash App uses a peer-to-peer payment service that allows you to deal directly with the recipient. As such, they don't often overturn payments, as this would undoubtedly lead to mass fraud and public loss of trust. Imagine if you had even a 10% chance of reversing a payment to a merchant for services.
Less than ethical people or those in a pinch would abuse the system so much that Cash App wouldn't be accepted as a form of payment by anyone. Similarly, many solopreneurs often refuse to take credit card payments due to the risk of incurring a dispute and losing revenue.
Cash App is a super easy and secure way to conduct business and send money to loved ones. However, it can be a dangerous place where a mere typo or misclick can result in monetary losses in the thousands. Always double-check the name of the recipient before sending any money.
And if you're super paranoid about using digital transactions, head over to your local gas station to get cash back. To help you find out cash back limits and the stores you can pull cash from, head over to my article on gas stations and stores that do cash back.
